Our Charism

The Justice Desk is not politically or religiously affiliated, however, The Justice Desk is passionate about the charism of Blessed Edmund Rice. This charism promotes the principles of justice, democracy, peace, community engagement, non-violence, and empowerment.

Edmund Rice challenged injustice, promoted education and advocated for the rights of the poor. He challenged the status quo of the time because he saw that it was favouring certain groups of people over others. Edmund Rice started to see that “giving out handouts of food or clothing was no longer enough. What was needed was to equip young people mentally, morally, and religiously to stand on their own two-feet and to change the society that caused and allowed them to be poor- a difficult programme, and one that would be considered radical by some of the ruling classes.” (The Edmund Rice Centre, 2006)
